The sixth line of the Heart Sutra unveils the profound wisdom of letting go and embracing the path of awakening. It guides us to understand the transformative power of the Perfection of Wisdom, which liberates our hearts and minds from all hindrances. Let us explore the wisdom contained within this line:
以無所得故,菩提薩埵,依般若波羅蜜多故,心無罣礙,無罣礙故,無有恐怖,遠離顛倒夢想,究竟涅槃。
In this line, Avalokiteshvara illuminates the path of awakening and the nature of ultimate liberation:
以無所得故 (yǐ wú suǒ dé gù) emphasizes the practice of non-attachment. It reveals that true awakening arises from the understanding that there is nothing to grasp or attain. By letting go of the fixation on personal gain and desires, we open ourselves to the boundless possibilities of the present moment.
菩提薩埵 (pú tí sà duǒ) refers to Bodhisattvas, beings dedicated to the path of enlightenment and the welfare of all sentient beings. This term reminds us that the teachings of the Heart Sutra are for those aspiring to realize enlightenment and cultivate compassionate action.
依般若波羅蜜多故 (yī bān ruò bō luó mì duō gù) highlights the reliance on the Perfection of Wisdom. The Perfection of Wisdom, symbolized by the Prajnaparamita, represents the wisdom that realizes the true nature of reality, transcending conventional conceptual understanding. It is this wisdom that guides us on the path of awakening.
心無罣礙 (xīn wú guà ài) signifies a mind free from obstacles and hindrances. It invites us to cultivate a mind that is not entangled by attachments, biases, or obscurations. A mind that is open, clear, and receptive to the truth.
無罣礙故 (wú guà ài gù) further emphasizes the absence of obstacles. When we let go of attachments and prejudices, our minds become liberated from the limitations of dualistic thinking. We transcend the entanglements that bind us and obstruct our path to realization.
無有恐怖 (wú yǒu kǒng bù) signifies the absence of fear. When we realize the emptiness of all phenomena and let go of attachments, we free ourselves from the fear that arises from grasping and clinging. We find refuge in the understanding that there is nothing inherently fearful or threatening in the nature of reality.
遠離顛倒夢想 (yuǎn lí diān dǎo mèng xiǎng) directs us to distance ourselves from delusions and false perceptions. It encourages us to see through the illusions of the conceptual mind and recognize the true nature of existence beyond our conditioned projections.
究竟涅槃 (jiū jìng niè pán) points to the ultimate realization of Nirvana, the state of complete liberation. It is the profound awakening that arises from the transcendence of all limitations, attachments, and delusions.
This sixth line of the Heart Sutra calls us to let go of attachments, cultivate wisdom, and embrace the path of awakening. By realizing the emptiness of grasping, transcending hindrances, and dispelling delusions, we move closer to the ultimate realization of liberation and the profound state of Nirvana.
May the contemplation of this profound line inspire us to cultivate non-attachment, wisdom, and fearlessness on our journey towards awakening and may we realize the ultimate truth of liberation for the benefit of all beings.
